Kantele: The folk music instrument kantele (kannel, kankles eller kokle) is made of a hollow, wing-formed resonator carved of one piece of wood and strung with a varying number of metal strings. The construction dates from the Middle Ages and is also found in the Oriental instrument, qanun. Today the kantele is a popular folk instrument in both Finland, the Baltic countries, and part of Russia.

Medieval fiddle: The medieval fiddle used in this performance was built by Richard Earle after a small picture in an English psalter from ca. 1050. Early medieval fiddles, such as this one, were carved out of a solid block of wood and the top was glued in place. They most often had either three or five strings, but have been portrayed with between one and seven strings. This fiddle has four strings.
